EXCLUSIVE: Federal Judge Jesse Furman’s Son Interned For Sen. Schumer, Biden White House

Ilan Dubler-Furman, the adult son of United States District Judge Jesse Furman, served as an intern for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in 2023 and for the White House Domestic Policy Council under President Joe Biden from June to August 2024, according to public records.

The revelation of these internships comes as Judge Furman, a federal judge in the Southern District of New York, recently issued a ruling expanding an injunction that prevents Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from deporting Mahmoud Khalil. Khalil, a green card holder and former Columbia University student, organized pro-Palestinian protests on campus that included support for Hamas, a designated foreign terrorist organization. Senate Democrats have sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s decision to pursue Khalil’s deportation.

Additional family connections have drawn scrutiny to Judge Furman. In December 2024, Sen. Schumer appointed Furman’s wife to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, which operates under the oversight of Sen. Marco Rubio and President Trump. Furman’s daughter, Mira Dubler-Furman, also interned for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg from March to June 2021. Bragg later prosecuted former President Trump in a high-profile 2024 case overseen by Judge Juan Merchan.

Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats have publicly backed Khalil, issuing a statement on social media condemning his detention by ICE as “straight-up authoritarianism” and an alleged reprisal for exercising his First Amendment rights in a manner opposed by Trump.

It is also important to note that Judge Furman’s brother-in-law, Josh Dubler, is an associate professor of religion at the University of Rochester and a member of its Faculty for Justice in Palestine chapter, according to Loomer Unleashed. In November 2024, Dubler attended the arraignments of four University of Rochester students facing suspension for their alleged involvement in pro-Palestinian protests. These demonstrations reportedly included actions that some Jewish students and faculty found threatening and intimidating. During the protests, hundreds of “wanted” posters featuring photographs of Jewish faculty members were distributed across the university, sparking outrage within the campus community. Dubler publicly called on the University of Rochester to drop the criminal charges against the students involved.

The family connections of Judge Furman have led some observers to question whether these relationships might affect his ability to remain impartial as a judge, especially in cases related to immigration, national security, and free speech.
